Specialized care and mentorship in Infectious Diseases

At VCH, Dr. Mah specializes in providing care for patients living with or at risk of infection. Many of her patients are susceptible to infections because of their impaired immune system, due to leukemia, stem cell transplants, or solid organ transplant. “What I like about working at VCH is the opportunity to provide high quality and specialized care to patients from across B.C.”

She finds it rewarding to help patients understand their conditions and treatment plans. “Often there are multiple issues occurring simultaneously and patients may not understand what is happening to them so when I can explain it to them, and they thank me for their renewed understanding it feels like I have made a difference.”

In her role, Dr. Mah consults on patients throughout the hospital, interacting with a diverse range of colleagues and team. She particularly values her close collaboration with the pharmacy team, which plays a vital role in supporting the care she provides. 

Dr. Mah is also a Clinical Associate Professor and Training Program Director at the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of British Columbia. At VCH, she loves teaching and working with trainees. “Not only does Infectious Diseases involve the knowledge of bugs and drugs, but it also focuses on advocating for marginalized populations and advocating for system improvements. Working with trainees who embody this passion for justice and advocacy is gratifying because it reminds me of my own passion,” she explains. Dr. Mah also has the opportunity to teach other trainees from various disciplines, including Allied Health, nursing and pharmacy, in addition to her colleagues. She takes great pride in seeing them grow and in sharing why she thinks Infectious Diseases is an exciting subspecialty in Medicine.
