Story
Healing, identity and resilience through art
Indigenous art plays an important role in fostering welcoming, culturally safe environments for Indigenous clients, patients, families, staff and medical staff at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).
The presence of Indigenous artwork throughout VCH health care sites is a powerful expression of identity, resilience, belonging and a visual reminder that Indigenous Peoples, their histories, and their stories are seen and valued.
In the past year, there have been eight new installations at VCH sites. Recent additions include:
Courage to climb, Darryl Blyth, Musqueam
Location: Foundry Richmond

Pictured: Artist Darryl Blyth and Elder Larry Grant
This Coast Salish design features a young bear climbing to new heights with the presence and support of an older guardian bear. This piece was created to echo Foundry BC's tenet of providing a welcoming, inclusive and accessible space of support for young people and their families.
Courage, Compassion, Commitment, Jordan Gallie, Tsleil-Waututh Nation
Location: 12th Avenue parkade at Vancouver General Hospital

This Coast Salish design features and school of salmon to represent the determination and strong will to overcome obstacles with a true heart. The mural greets staff and medical staff, patients and visitors with positivity before they even enter the hospital to bring peace and calm.
