A complete series of two doses of vaccine is recommended for stronger and longer-lasting protection against mpox infection. Imvamune vaccine appointments to protect against monkeypox are now available at select pharmacies and community clinics.
What to expect
Imvamune, the vaccine used for the prevention of mpox is approved as a TWO-DOSE series by Health Canada. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends a complete vaccine series of two doses for stronger and longer-lasting protection against mpox infection. The vaccine is not recommended or available (free or private pay) to the general public, including individuals who are travelling if they do not meet current vaccine eligibility criteria.

Vaccine eligibility
Mpox vaccine is offered in two-dose series.
Eligibility:
- Two-spirit people, transgender people, or cisgender males who also self-identify as belonging to the gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men community. And at least 1 of the following:
- Have had sex with more than one partner;
- Have had sex with a partner who has more than one partner;
- Have had casual sex (e.g. cruising);
- Engage in sex work either as a worker or a client.
- Sexual partners of individual who meet the above criteria.
- Sex workers regardless of gender, sex assigned at birth, or sexual orientation.
- Staff or volunteers in sex-on-premises venues where workers may have contact with fomites (i.e., surfaces) potentially contaminated with mpox.
- Those who engage in sex tourism regardless of gender, sex assigned at birth, or sexual orientation.
- Individuals who anticipate experiencing any of the above scenarios.
- Canadian health care professionals travelling to support the mpox clade I outbreak in countries where there is a level 2 travel health notice for mpox.
- Individuals with history of smallpox vaccine receipt in childhood can now be offered TWO-DOSES instead of only one as previously recommended.
The vaccine is not recommended or available to the general public, including individuals who are travelling if they do not meet current vaccine eligibility criteria.
