Information bulletin ➞ January 21 2021 Vancouver Coastal Health cardiologist takes multifaceted approach to uncovering spontaneous coronary artery dissection Vancouver, B.C. – Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) is every bit as surprising as it sounds. A deadly heart condition which affects young, otherwise healthy women, recent research shows that SCAD accounts for 25 per cent of heart attacks in women under the age of 50. Despite its prevalence, SCAD is poorly understood and relatively unknown. Dr. Jacqueline Saw, an interventional cardiologist at Vancouver Coastal Health's Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and Canada's leading expert on SCAD, is aiming to change that through research and through knowledge translation at the Vancouver SCAD Conference on January 30, 2021. Since schools reopened in September, VCH has not recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 cases among school-aged children relative to other groups. Those aged 5-17 years of age accounted for 6 per cent of VCH’s COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, despite representing 10 per cent of VCH’s population. Evidence shows children are less likely to get infected with COVID-19, and less likely to experience severe symptoms if infected.
